The Best Reston Hotel: Hyatt
Why: Shuttle to Dulles Airport
The Hyatt at Reston is in close proximity to Dulles airport, and offers a shuttle from Dulles airport. Unfortunately, the hotel doesn’t shuttle guests to the Metro, and the walk would take 20 to 30 minutes, a short cab ride will have you at the Reston Metro in minutes. The hotel is surrounded by shops and restaurants due to its location in Reston Town Square. With rates being pretty high compared to nearby options at the Spring Hill and Tysons Corner station the Hyatt has trouble standing out beyond its convenience to both Dulles and the Metro.
There are four hotels in the Reston, VA area that offer a free airport shuttle to Dulles International Airport and then also a free shuttle to the Reston DC Metro station. These hotels enable you to get a free shuttle from Dulles airport, check-in, and then get a free shuttle to the Reston Metro station that will connect you with the greater DC area. Those hotels are: Sheraton, Westin, SpringHill Suites and Hyatt House. Hyatt House and SpringHill Suites also offer free breakfast.
Reston Neighborhood: The main appeal of Reston is its proximity to Dulles Airport. There is a $5 shuttle from the Wiehle-Reston East metro stop, making this location an ideal place to stay for those heading in and out of Dulles. Reston, Virginia, is a suburb of Washington, DC now connected to the city by the newly opened silver metro line. This station is unique because for the next four years it will bridge the gap between arriving in Dulles International Airport and catching the metro. Currently, Reston lies at the end of the silver line (the Wiehle-Reston East stop), though there are plans to extend the line out to Washington Dulles International Airport in the coming years. Reston is an affluent suburb made up of both commuters and professionals who work at the many companies headquartered in and around Reston. While areas of Reston are walkable, a car is the preferable means of transportation—but beware, this area is incredibly congested on weekdays, so plan extra time for traffic for your trips.
Things to Do: Beyond Reston Town Center, which offers shopping and activities such as a winter ice skating rink, Reston a number of family-friendly activities, such as nearby waterpark The Water Mine Family Swimmin’ Hole and the Reston Zoo. In addition to its own offerings, Reston is a great jumping off point into Virginia. Close by are the shopping mecca at Tyson’s Corner and the Smithsonian’s Udvar-Hazy Center, an annex of the National Air and Space Museum by Dulles Airport displaying, among other artifacts, the space shuttle Discovery. Other attractions a short ride from Reston include the Virginia side of Great Falls Park, Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, and the many Civil War historic sites in Virginia.
What to Eat: At the center of activity in Reston is Reston Town Center, where you’ll find a plethora of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. For a nice but casual night out, try Clyde’s of Reston, known for its affordable American cuisine, monthly specials, and kid-friendly atmosphere. Passion Fish offers the best of local seafood, as well as top-notch sushi, or visit Neyla Mediterranean Bistro and try their famous lamb chops.
