About the Bethesda Neighborhood
Bethesda offers unparalleled dining options when compared to all other areas in DC. The population is affluent, and leans more toward families and older young professionals. The area is safe. There are bars if you want to go out near your hotel, but the main draw is the extensive restaurant options. Taste of Bethesda is a popular festival where all the restaurants offer samplers and there is music and crafts.
If you are staying in Bethesda for tourism expect to spend about 20 minutes on the metro to get to downtown and then another 20 minutes of walking to get to the National Mall, and Smithsonian Museums. Because Bethesda sits on the Red Line you can get here from Union Station without transferring, other popular stops on the Red Line include Chinatown, the National Zoo and DuPont Circle. NIH is one short stop away from the Bethesda Metro Station. Bethesda sits on the interchange of 270 and 495 which makes it an easy location to maneuver in and out of DC without getting into too much in-town traffic. Take Wisconsin Ave. straight and you’ll end up in Georgetown.
Airport, AMTrak, MARC & VRE Access
BWI, Dulles and Regan are not too close. Staying in Bethesda means you will need to start on the Red Line and then transfer lines to the Metro’s Yellow Line in order to get to Regan National Airport. The metro ride is about 45 minutes. Dulles is just about as far as BWI. BWI can be reached by driving up 95, which is closer to Bethesda than most other areas in DC. If airport convenience is a priority don’t stay in Bethesda. The MARC and AMTrak can be boarded either at Rockville station or Union station on the red line. The closest VRE station is Union Station which is also the red line.
